Devotional – 30 ‘Rebekah talks with Reuben’

Chapter – 30 ‘Rebekah talks with Reuben’

The Gorsech home was quiet as Rebekah walked toward the kitchen. She smelled coffee brewing and smiled to herself. A few more steps and she could see her older brother sitting at the counter just lifting a cup to his lips. She spoke, “Hey Ruben, is that coffee any good?” He tipped it in her direction, smiled, then spoke, “Not to strong but tasty; the way I like it.”

She smiled at him and then asked, “Have you heard from your girlfriend since we visited with her?” He starred at her a moment before he responded, “Well first, she is not my girlfriend and NO, I haven’t heard from her.” Rebekah told him she wanted to call her and spend the afternoon visiting. He shook his head and then said, “No, I don’t think so. I still have several months or so to work with her before we complete the project.” Rebekah told him that he could come along to make sure she didn’t ‘rat’ on him. Ten minutes later she was on the phone with Jenny making some plans.

Rebekah told Reuben they would meet for lunch and then go to the park for a walk. He didn’t say a word but he did give her a look that she couldn’t quite read.

It was mid-afternoon and they had just walked a couple of miles. It was a cool fifty-five degrees but the sun was shining as they walked to a bench to take a seat. Rebekah sat on the far end and Jenny sat next to her. Reuben wasn’t sure if he had just been setup or what but he took a seat next to Jenny. His mind took a double take when she turned toward him; her face was about eight inches from his. Whoa, he thought, beautiful green eyes and a complexion crystal clear. She commented, “So Rubaah, when we get back on the job are you going to take me to lunch and then a walk like we are doing today? I’d really like to be better friends with you.”

He was speechless but Rebekah wasn’t, she commented, “I think Jenny would make a great sister-in-law. I think dad and mom would love her as well.” The bench was silent for a few more moments but finally Jenny spoke, “I’m not in a big hurry to say any wedding vows but just for the record; I have had a crush on you for several months.” The mind of Reuben was in high gear. “What was going on,” he thought?

Later that evening Rebekah was starting to pack for her return to the farm. She took a break and went to the kitchen for a water. Reuben was writing something on his computer and looked in her direction as she neared him. She asked, “Are you sending Jenny a note to see if she was serious today? I do think she has a little crush on you.” Again, he looked at her but did not comment. Rebekah said, “Ask her if she would like to visit our farm for a few days before you two have to return to work. Jaye and I would love to have you.” He added a few more lines to his note and then hit the SEND key. He winked his right eye at her, then smiled.

Two days later the three of them were in Jesse’s SUV driving toward Uniontown. Valentine had been called and was busy spot cleaning the two upstairs bedrooms for the guest. He was wondering, “What had Rebekah planned for her brother and Jenny, his coworker?”

As Reuben left the gas station Rebekah and Jenny were in the back seat talking. Rebekah commented, “You told us that when you went to camp you made a decision to trust in Jesus as your Savior; is that correct?” Jenny told her she had and had truly meant it. “Through my high school years I was in the youth group but when I went away to college I just seemed to lapse into the worldly or secular routine. I’m a good girl by their standards; never have I been drunk or been with a man, but on the other hand, I’ve not been involved in the things of the Lord.” She took a deep breath, then sighed, then spoke, “Often I think I should get involved in a good church activity and do something gratifying or satisfying for a less fortunate person but it seems I get side tracked.”

Just then Reuben commented, “I’m not a good Jew or even spiritual by my Rabbi’s standards, but my brother and sister have something I wish I had. One day I hope to find it.”

What a comment?

Can it be found? – Yes and normally we who are searching, find it; maybe not as often but still on occasions, even the person not searching, at times, can find it. The WORD of God often convicts a searching heart; it can be by reading the scriptures or it can be by hearing the teaching from someone who knows and teaches the truth of the scriptures.

John 3:3, Jesus said, “unless one is born again [of the Spirit] they will not enter the kingdom of God. [It goes like this; a person must be born twice or they will die twice] We all need a physical and spiritual birth OR we will die a physical death and at Judgement be cast into the lake of fire known as the 2nd death… That’s not what I think, that is what scripture teaches. Revelation 20:11-15

Just like my Pastor tells us every once in a while, “Scripture means what it says.” Here is the Question: Do you believe in God? If so, then the only way any of us get to know anything about him is through the words written in scripture. The Bible is the only thing telling people about God.

Revelation 20:11-15, 11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat upon it, from whose presence earth and heaven fled away, and no place was found for them. 12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is the book of life; and the dead were judged from the things which were written in the books, according to their deeds. 13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead which were in them; and they were judged, every one of them according to their deeds. 14 Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire15 And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire. [Note – There is more than one book; people who are saved or born again have their name in the book of life; the people who reject or make no decision for Christ will be judged from the books; then be cast into the lake of fire .. according to scripture.]

God’s standard is the way to eternal life – the secular standard does not lead to heaven. Matthew 7:13-14
