BS-7 ‘Who is God the Holy Spirit?’
What the Bible teaches about the 3rd person of the Trinity.
Devine’ Holy Trinity = Father, Son, Holy Spirit
First of all this is a longer and more in-depth study so take your time trying to get through all of it. [There are two parts to it] Think about it, are either the Father or the Son at the moment, sitting on the throne here on planet earth? They will be one day but when Jesus ascended to ‘heaven’ he told the disciples to wait on the Holy Spirit Luke 24:44-49
[Therefore it is written, Jesus explained that HE must suffer; HE told them to wait in the city for a while; then gave an assignment. Is that assignment still in effect? What is yours and my assignment?]
In today’s world, while the Father and Son reign from the heavenly Holy-of-Holies the Spirit of God is active here on earth. What do some of the scripture verses tells us about ‘’God, the Holy Spirit.
Question – 1. When you ‘think’ of the Holy Spirit, who is it that you are thinking about?
Is the Holy Spirit a part of the Holy Triune God? [Yes] Matthew 28:18-19
* Is there an unholy spirit? What do you think? [Yes there is] Rev. 19:20, 20:1-2.
- Is there an anointing of the Holy Spirit?
2 Cor. 1:21-22 – 21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God, 22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.
1 John 2:27 – 27 As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
You can’t be ‘sealed or anointed’ if you are not a follower or believer of Christ. Have you put your ‘trust’ and ‘committed’ yourself to Christ?
- Did the Lord provided a Baptism or a filling of the Holy Spirit?
Acts 1:4-5 – 4 Gathering them together, He [Jesus] commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, “Which,” He said, “you heard of from Me; 5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.” [From Jesus resurrection to the assentation to heaven was 40 days]
Acts 2:1-4 – When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. 2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other [languages], as the Spirit was giving them utterance.
[There was a purpose for this; it was 50 days from Passover to Pentecost]
People were coming to Jerusalem for PASSOVER who did not speak the Hebrew language. God provided this gift so that people could hear the Gospel in their own language.
There is a difference in the filling & the baptism of the Holy Spirit *
- Does the Lord provide the Gift of the Holy Spirit?
John 20:21-22 – 21 So Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you; as the Father has sent Me, I also send you.” 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and *said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
1 Peter 4:12-14 – Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you; 13 but to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 14 If you are reviled for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you.
[Who are blessed? Those who put trust in Jesus and serve him.]
Acts 2:38 – 38 Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
[This happens when you repent and put your full trust in Christ as your atonement for sin. A Gift is not a Gift unless you receive it when it is offered.]
- Can the Holy Spirit dwell in the heart of a true Christian?
Romans 8:14-17 – 14. For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. 15 For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him. [Are you a child of God? Will there be a time of suffering for our generation?]
2 Timothy 1:14 – 14 Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you. [Our treasure is eternal if we have the SPIRIT dwelling within. Few have this treasure.]
1 Cor. 3:16 – 16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? [This happens on your day of salvation; it will last until your last breathe; then the spirit goes to be with the Lord.]
- Can Christians be inspired by the Holy Spirit?
2 Peter 1:21 – 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. [Beware of the secular false prophets. They are not all of God who claim to be; be cautious. i.e. David Koresh, Jim Jones, the Moonies.]
Rev. 1:10-13 – 10 I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet, 11 saying, “Write in a book what you see, and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” 12 Then I turned to see the voice that was speaking with me. And having turned I saw seven golden lampstands; 13 and in the middle of the lampstands I saw one like a son of man, clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash.
2 Samuel 23:1-3 – [Now these are the last words of David.] David the son of Jesse declares, the man who was raised on high declares, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, 2 “The Spirit of the Lord spoke by me, And His word was on my tongue. 3 “The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spoke to me, ‘He who rules over men righteously, who rules in the fear of God
- Offenses against the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 12:31-32 – 31 “Therefore I say to you, any sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven people, but blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven.32 Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. [If or when convicted; don’t reject the Holy Spirit.]
1 John 5:16-17 – 16 If anyone sees his brother committing a sin not leading to death, he shall ask and God will for him give life to those who commit sin not leading to death. There is a sin leading to death; I do not say that he should make request for this. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is a sin not leading to death. [Pray for others often thru the Spirit within you.]
Hebrews 10:29 – 29 How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled underfoot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace?
- Deity of the Holy Spirit.
John 3:5 – 5 Jesus answered, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. 6 That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is Spirit. [People, we have to be BORN twice; physical and spiritual.]
Romans 15:15-16 – But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God, 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God, so that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
John 14:16-17 – I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
2 Peter 1:20-21 – 20 But know this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation, 21 for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. [Without the Spirit speaking thru mankind; it is not of God.]
2 Timothy 3:16 – 16 All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; 17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. [The Apostle Paul’s last letter before martyrdom; it was written to Timothy]
- The Spirit of Truth.
John 14:16-17 – 16 I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.
- Holy Spirit personalities.
Conviction – John 16:7-11 – 7 But I tell you the truth, it is to your advantage that I [Christ Jesus] go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper [Holy Spirit] will not come to you; but if I go, I will send Him to you. 8 And He, when He comes, will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment; 9 concerning sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 and concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father and you no longer see Me; 11 and concerning judgment, because the ruler [Evil one] of this world has been judged. [The words of Jesus; think about today’s secular world; is there conviction of evil or deep-state sinful deeds taking place in the world?]
Comfort – Acts 9:31 – 31 So the church throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria enjoyed peace, being built up; and going on in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, it continued to increase. [The 1st generation of Christians, after Christ, were so in tune with the indwelling Spirit that they could endure suffering and other hardships with joy.]
Teaches – John 14:26 – 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.
Sanctified – Romans 15:15-16 – 15 But I have written very boldly to you on some points so as to remind you again, because of the grace that was given me from God, 16 to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles, ministering as a priest the gospel of God, so that my offering of the Gentiles may become acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit. …etc…
The Holy Spirit is omnipresent; everywhere at once.

Unholy or Evil Spirits
Satan, Antichrist, False Prophet, Demons [Fallen Angels]
Evil = morally wrong; Wicked; Bad; Harmful; someone who is evil-minded and an Evildoer. Per Webster’s definition.
Unholy = Not consecrated; Ungodly; Impious; Not sacred; Wicked; Heathen
Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil – The tree opened up a choice for Eve. She could obey God or not obey. [1] To obey was good but [2] to disobey was evil – [To disobey God is sin.] Genesis 2:9, 17 & 3:17
- Crafty – The serpent [Satan] tells a half truth. [A characteristic in today’s secular world; they tell you what you want to hear even though they know it is only a half-truth; then down the road, later, you have been tricked.]
Gen. 3:1– Now the serpent was more crafty [craftier] than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, ‘You shall not eat from any tree of the garden’?” 2 The woman said to the serpent, “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat from it or touch it, or you will die.’” 4 The serpent said to the woman, “You surely will not die! 5 For God knows that in the day you eat from it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
2 Cor. 11:3 – 3 But I am afraid that, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, your minds will be led astray from the simplicity and purity of devotion to Christ.
- Calls ‘Evil’ good and ‘Good’ evil. [Woes for the wicked; isn’t scripture used as our guide?]
Isaiah 5:20 – Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!
- Denies both the Son and the Father. 1 John 2:22 – 22 Who is the liar but the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ? This is the antichrist, the one who denies the Father and the Son. 10:33
- Denies the incarnation of Christ. 1 John 4:3, 2 John 7 – By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is from God; 3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God; this is the spirit of the antichrist, of which you have heard that it is coming, and now it is already in the world. [They travel the wide road.]
7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not acknowledge Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This is the deceiver and the antichrist.
- Deceitful [One of Satan’s characteristics]
1 Timothy 4:1 – 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. [Whoever speaks half-truths to mankind?]
Eph. 6:11 – But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons.
- Pervert’s the Scripture.
Matthew 4:6 – Then the devil *took Him [Jesus] into the holy city and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, 6 and *said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, So that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’”
Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
- Demon-possessed.
Matthew 8:16– 16 When evening came, they brought to Him many who were demon-possessed; and He cast out the spirits with a word, and healed all who were ill.
Luke 9:38-39 – 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, 39 and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at the mouth; and only with difficulty does it leave him, mauling him as it leaves. [The son was demon possessed with an evil spirit]
CONCLUSION
Holy Spirit is only given to Believers – Acts 15:7-8 – After there had been much debate, Peter stood up and said to them, “Brethren, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles would hear the word of the gospel and believe. 8 And God, who knows the heart, testified to them giving them the Holy Spirit, just as He also did to us; 9 and He made no distinction between us and them, cleansing their hearts by faith..
Holy Spirit only dwells within Believers – 1 Cor. 3:14-16 – 14 IF any man’s work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward. 15 If any man’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire. 16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
Holy Spirit is the Evidence of Adoption – Romans 8:16-17 – 16 The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, 17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.
The Second Death awaits the Evil and Unholy – Rev. 2:11, Rec. 20:6, Rev. 20:14-15
Selah…. It Means – “People! So what do you think about that?” Psalms
Psalms 50:1-6 – The Mighty One, God, the Lord, has spoken, And summoned the earth from the rising of the sun to its setting. 2 Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty, God has shone forth. 3 May our God come and not keep silence; Fire devours before Him, And it is very tempestuous around Him. 4 He summons the heavens above, And the earth, to judge His people: 5 “Gather My godly ones to Me, Those who have made a covenant with Me by sacrifice.” 6 And the heavens declare His righteousness, For God Himself is judge. Selah.
Psalms 52:1-3 – Why do you boast in evil, O mighty man? The lovingkindness of God endures all day long. 2 Your tongue devises destruction, like a sharp razor, O worker of deceit. 3 You love evil more than good, Falsehood more than speaking what is right. Selah.
Psalm 87:1-3 – His foundation is in the holy mountains. 2 The Lord loves the gates of Zion More than all the other dwelling places of Jacob. 3 Glorious things are spoken of you, O city of God. Selah.
Did God choose the small Nation of Israel?
Attachment
Matthew 28:18-19, And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
Revelation 19:20, And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone. [Unholy trinity=Satan, antichrist, false prophet]
Rev. 20:1-2, Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding the key of the abyss and a great chain in his hand. 2 And he laid hold of the dragon, the serpent of old, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;
Is there Judgement because of sin?
Genesis 2:9, 17, Out of the ground the Lord God caused to grow every tree that is pleasing to the sight and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil……… but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” [Disobedience is sin.]
Two trees providing two eternal results for mankind
Genesis 3:17, Then to Adam He said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree about which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat from it’; Cursed is the ground because of you; In toil you will eat of it All the days of your life.
Does the Holy Spirit live in You OR are you under the control of the un-holy spirit?
