BS-22 ‘Triune God’

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit = Trinity

Reference BS 5 – 6 – 7.

Question: Is the word trinity written in the Bible? NO: Is it implied? YES

The three most frequent scriptures that are used are the following:

  1. Matthew 3:16-17, – 16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God [Holy Spirit] descending as a dove and lighting on Him17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said [God], “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
  2. Matthew 28:19, – 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
  3. Luke 3:21-22, – 21 Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, “You are My [God the Father speaking] beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.”

The Apostle Paul speaking to the Colossians mentions a mystery to them.

  1. Colossians 1:15-17, – 15 He [Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.16 For by Him [that’s Jesus] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him17 He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. [Before the first thing in creation occurred, Jesus became the only begotten of the Father. Can the mind of man fathom this teaching?]
  2. Colossians 2:9, –                  For in Him [Christ Jesus] all the fullness of Deity [Only God possesses Deity so that means Jesus is God] dwells in bodily form, 10 and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority [a play on words, but God as ‘the Son’ possesses all authority; the person sitting to the right of HIS MAJESTY has been granted ALL authority.]

The angel Gabriel visited Nazareth to talk with Mary.

  1. Luke 1:35, –               35 The angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High [Father God] will overshadow you; and for that reason the holy Child shall be called the Son of God.

Peter also speaks to the chosen of God to encourage them.

  1. 1 Peter 1:1-2, –  Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ, To those who reside as aliens, scattered throughout Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, who are chosen according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, by the sanctifying work of the Spirit, to obey Jesus Christ [the Son who is often referred to as the Lord] and be sprinkled with His blood: May grace and peace be yours in the fullest measure. [Does God ever choose?]

John, the Apostle, share a truth from Jesus in the gospel of John.

  1. John14:16-17, –                   16 I [Jesus] will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may be with you forever; 17 that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you.

[Saved Christians have the Holy Spirit dwelling within]

Paul, the Apostle, explaining a mystery to the church.

  1. Romans 14:17-18, –   17 for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit18 For he who in this way serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.

[God’s kingdom is not physical; it’s spiritual; Jesus came to start a spiritual revival]

  1. 1 Cor. 12:4-6, –              Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same SpiritAnd there are varieties of ministries, and the same LordThere are varieties of effects, but the same God who works all things in all persons.

[Like the physical body which has many parts, the gifts of the church body are many.]

  1. Ephesians 4:4-6, –        There is one body [the Church] and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism, 6 one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all. [The trinity working together as one.]

Other scripture where the Trinity is mentioned.

  1. 2 Corinthians 13:14, –  14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit, be with you all. [The Apostle speaking to the Corinthians]
  2. 2 Cor. 1:21-22, –            21 Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and anointed us is God,22 who also sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a pledge.

[God’s plan is in effect or we would all be LOST]

  1. 1 Cor. 8:6, – yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom are all things and we exist for Him; and one Lord, Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we exist through Him.

[Scripture says what it means; and means what it says. The deity of God includes the Father and Son.]

  1. John 1:14, –          14 And the Word [Christ] became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Question: All three; Father, Son, and Holy Spirit are mentioned several times. Are they equal in rank? ___

When Jesus spent time in Israel; he was both God and man; the God-Man. He was the incarnate God and think about it; only the shed blood of God can fully wash the sins of mankind as though we had never committed the sin. It’s called JUSTIFICATION and only comes through Jesus.

John 14:9-10, –    Jesus said to him, “Have I been so long with you, and yet you have not come to know Me, Philip? He who has seen Me has seen the Father; how can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father, and the Father is in Me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on My own initiative, but the Father abiding in Me does His works.

John 3:34-36, –    34 For He [Jesus] whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure. 35 The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand. 36 He who believes [fully trust] in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.”

John 4:24, –         24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

John 14:28, –       28 You heard that I said to you, ‘I go away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved Me, you would have rejoiced because I go to the Father, for the Father is greater than I.

[Theologians say that as a man; Jesus was implying that when he became fully God again he would be a part of the triune God once again – not the God-man.]                                                   SELAH..
