BS-21 ‘Bible Words’

BS-21 – ‘Scripture Words’

Scripture uses many words to describe or identify a thought trying to be explained.

Some Words to ponder; what do they mean?

FaithThe bible definition is in the book of Hebrews 11:1. Now FAITH is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. For by it the men of old gained approval.’ So Abram, by FAITH followed the leading of God to move from Ur to Israel. God blessed him for being obedient to the call from the Him. The Christian, by FAITH, must believe that scripture is from God and that by believing or putting our trust in Jesus as Lord & Savior will save our souls from the torments of hell.

WisdomI like Proverbs 9:10 for my bible reference. It reads, The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.’ Then it goes on to read, ‘And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.’ So, true wisdom comes from the Lord; the secular world does have some smart people but we who are followers of Christ need Godly wisdom.

TrustIn Psalms 56:11 NASB, there is one verse to use; ‘In God I have put my trust, I shall not be afraid. Using my KJV; in Matthew 12:21 & Romans 15:12 the scripture is referencing Jesus; it reads ‘in his name the Gentiles will TRUST.’ A question, do you put your hope or trust in the stock market or in Jesus to get you to heaven?

Savior Webster defines the word as one who saves, rescues, or delivers. Jesus does all three when we put our trust in Him. John the Apostle writes, 1 John 4:14 and it reads, ‘We have seen and testify that the Father has sent the Son to be the Savior of the World.’ So, if anyone in the world accepts the gift God is offering, they will be saved. It is not automatic; with your own mouth you have to confess that Christ is Lord.

Saved To preserve from harm or destruction says Webster. It takes a Savior before you can be saved. What is a Christian saved from? The simplest answer is we are saved from the wrath to come, which might be ‘hell’ for some. How about you? I like John 3:17; it reads God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world but that the world through him might be saved.’ There’s no other way except through Christ!

Love – Unselfish, loyal, and commitment toward another person; it is a fruit of the Holy Spirit.

Agape;            Greek-The unconditional love of God for people; powerful; willing to die for.

Philia;             Greek-The way you love or bond with family; a marriage love.

Eros;               Greek-The romantic love; affection; physical feelings.

Ahavah;          Hebrew-Rejoice and delight in someone. You give to the other in love.

RepentI like Mark 1:14-15. Now after John (the Baptist) had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, and saying; “the time is fulfilled, and the Kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”’ So, repenting means making a U-turn in life and not following the ungodly or secular things of the world but turning to the Lord and His ways. We are not perfect but we are Saved people!

PrayerThe act of asking for something; a solemn petition. Read Matthew 6:5-15 for the instructions that Jesus gave. Look at John 17:1, at 17:6, and at 17:20; Jesus prays for himself, for his disciples, and for all believers. When a person is angry at God for something and maybe talks unkindly, is that praying or venting?

GraceWhen using this word we are talking about God’s Grace. His Grace is like no other; it is ‘Underserved acceptance or favor’ to we who are sinners. We are all sinners, which should mean judgement but because of God’s mercy He provides the repented person with the Gift of Salvation. Ephesians 2:8-9. A person needs Faith in God b4 GRACE is given.

GiftI’m talking about God’s Gift. His Gift to mankind was Jesus. Not everyone accepts a gift when it is offered, do they? I’ve seen people turn down gifts for whatever reason. So, the only way to receive God’s Gift is to accept it; a Gift is not yours unless you actually take it. Roman 6:23 speaks of the greatest gift, eternal life. You can’t buy it; that it is why it is so valuable.

JustificationRomans 4:25, 5:18 – God forgives just as though we had never sinned. We are justified through Christ our Savior. Jesus made me ‘right with God’

PropitiationRomans 3:25 – Father God was satisfied with Christ shed blood as the only sacrifice needed to nullify our sin. Christ Jesus is our Propitiation to God. Jesus took our place; HE covered our sin with HIS atoning blood.

RedemptionRomans 3:24, 8:23 – We are ransomed through Christ and cleared from bondage [sin].

ElectRomans 9:10-13 – God determines and fulfills HIS plan with people of HIS choiceA Theology definition of Election – an act of God before creation in which HE chooses some people to be saved, not on account of any foreseen merit in them, but only because of his sovereign good pleasure.

SanctificationRomans 5:2, 15:16 – God sets us apart by justification and declares us a SAINT; Believers are set apart at conversion, [When we repent and put our TRUST in Jesus as our Lord] although we still sin in the flesh, we begin to serve in various ways.

GlorificationRomans 8:30, 8:18 – The ultimate state of the Believer after death when they become like Christ. [Immortal, never to grow old or die; sinless thereafter].

ConfessionRomans 10:9-10, Math. 10:32 – A person with their own mouth must acknowledge and confess Jesus as their Lord& Savior. [They acknowledge they are a sinner and put their TRUST in HIM for their Atonement / Salvation].

PredestinationRomans 8:29-30, Eph. 1:3-13, 1 Cor. 2:7, Acts 13:48, Colossians 3:12 – God knows ahead of time who will make the choice to accept Christ as their Savior. The Lord provides the Grace to us to make the choice. All Knowing…. Of the future.

OmnipotencePsalms 147:5, Luke 1:37, Eph. 3:20 – All powerful (only God has this trait.)

OmnipresentPsalms 139:7-12 – Being present everywhere at once; unique only to God.

Omniscience2 Kings 24:13 – Having ALL knowledge, God knows the future. Scientist of the universe; Has FOREKNOWLEDGE.  [Only God knows what tomorrow is going to bring.]

AtonementDaniel 9:24 – God reconciles sinners to himself through Christ. The BLOOD of God is the ONLY atonement that cleanses sin. [In the O.T. lambs were used at PASSOVER.]

SalvationRomans 1:16, Eph. 1:13 – Salvation is a free gift from God that rescues the believer from sin and its consequences, which would be “eternally suffering in the depths of HELL.” [You are SAVED or Born Again from the consequence of your sins.]

RepentanceMark 1:15 – You make a life changing turn from Self & Sin to trusting, believing, and serving the Lord wholeheartedly, but knowing I am not perfect in all of my deeds and actions. [Repentance is needed before Salvation occurs.]

CALVINISM – God makes all the choices for man. (5)

ARMINIANISM – Humans have the free-will of making their choices. (5)

The Holy TRINITY God exists as more than one person; HE exist as three persons [Father – Son – Holy Spirit], but one God. [The ‘band’ is playing one song with ALL in tune.]

The unholy trinity – Satan – Antichrist – False Prophet.

Apologetics is providing a defense of the truthfulness of the Christian faith, for the purpose of convincing unbelievers, by using philosophical reasoning about God, from observing the universe. Often this tends to be a debate of two different people trying to make their point.

Reprobation is defined as the decision of God to pass over those who will not be saved and to punish them for sins.

Filled with the Holy Spirit – term used to define a person who continually renews his worship to the Lord. Not a one-time event.

Baptism of the Holy Spirit – a one-time event occurring when a person repents and trust Jesus as their Savior. The Holy Spirit becomes a part of the SAVED person and thereafter provides conviction. It is the persons 2nd birth [the spiritual birth].

A traditional Pentecostal term; an experience of the Christian when they speak in an unknown tongue; like their inner spirit speaking to the Lord. [The book of ACTS at Pentecost is an example; the Gospel was shared in many languages.]

Water Baptism – a baptism resulting from true repentance; it involves turning from sin to God, which results in righteous living. It is a public profession acknowledging Jesus as your Savior.

Substitution          Jesus died in my place [took my place, the NEW Passover LAMB] Lev. 16:1-10

Adoption     Jesus grafted me into the vine or family of God. John 15:1-11

Emmanuel God is with us; fulfilled in the birth of Jesus.

Incarnation – God becoming human; divinity becoming humanity. When God revealed himself.

High PriestChrist is our High Priest; he is at the right hand of Father God. We make our petitions known to him anywhere and anytime. Hebrews 8:

Mediator – The one who is between two parties to reconcile differences. Jesus is the Mediator between Father God and mankind.

ScriptureWhen it is read and taken in context, ‘scripture says what it means and it means what it says.’ Don’t take a few words out of context and try to make them sound like what a Jehovah’s Witness tries to portray when they knock at your door. [There is an old covenant & a new covenant. Hebrews 8:13 reads that Christ is the New Covenant; that Moses and the Old Covenant is obsolete. The LEGALIST still try to pass off the O.T. ways on to N.T. Christians. The N.T. reads that the new covenant is God’s amazing GRACE & LOVE.]

Systematic Theology = Study that answers the question, “What does the whole Bible teach us today about any given topic.”    It should be carefully organized, not random or disorganized.
